Kurz nach dem 1996 erschienenen Band Musik als existentielle Erfahrung. Schriften 1966 bis 1995 hatte in Hamburg Helmut Lachenmanns Oper Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern Premiere. Dieses Werk erlangte seither als Schlüsselwerk des zeitgenössischen Musiktheaters zunehmende Bedeutung – und nicht nur das: Lachenmanns maßgebliche Texte zu seiner Oper bilden ein eigenes, umfangreiches Kapitel in dem Schriftenband, die der an der Universität Genf lehrende, mit Lachenmanns Werk eng vertraute Musikwissenschaftler Ulrich Mosch herausgibt. Der Aufbau des Buches ähnelt darüber hinaus dem ersten Band. Es gibt erneut grundlegende Essays („Standortbestimmungen“), die oft weit über musikalische Fragen hinausführen, Portraittexte („Über Komponisten und andere“), ausführliche Analysen eigener Werke („In eigener Sache“), teils mit zahlreichen Notenbeispielen, sowie „Werkkommentare“ zu den eigenen, neu entstandenen Kompositionen. Ein zentrales und besonders umfangreiches Kapitel nehmen die vielfältigen „Antworten“ (Gespräche und Podiumsdiskussionen) ein, in denen Lachenmann seine Ästhetik im Austausch mit Dramaturgen, Journalisten, Philosophen und Musikforschern über die Jahre hinweg weiterentwickelt und immer wieder intensiv vertreten hat. Alle Texte wurden vom Komponisten revidiert, teils stark umgearbeitet und erweitert. Vieles wird zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht. Andere Texte sind seinerzeit in Programmheften erschienen und in dem Schriftenband erstmals einfach zugänglich. Anmerkungen des Herausgebers, Bibliographie, Werkverzeichnis, Diskographie und ein Personen- und Werkregister bilden den Anhang der Publikation
