COVID-19 hält die Welt in Atem. Das Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 konnte sich binnen kürzester Zeit beginnend von einem Markt in Wuhan, China über die ganze Welt ausbreiten. Dadurch wurde der gesamten Welt vor Augen geführt, wie leicht Gesundheitssystem und Weltwirtschaft ins Wanken zu bringen sind. Dieses Buch befasst sich mit den bisher verfügbaren biologischen Grundlage, der Epidemiologie, der Prävention und den medizinischen Möglichkeiten, die im Rahmen des Maßnahmen gegen die Ausbreitung entwickelt wurden. Es werden die molekularbiologische Grundlagen und Aufbau von Coronaviren im Allgemeinen und von SARS-CoV-2 im Besonderen dargestellt und hierbei die Ansatzpunkt aktueller Therapeutika und Impfstoffe besprochen. Nach einem Überblick der Epidemiologie und Ausbreitung des Virus, sowie der Herkunft und epidemiologischen Kenndaten, wird die Grundlage für sinnvolle Präventionsmaßnahmen besprochen. Hierzu werden die Arten der Transmission und die Veränderungen des Virus während seiner Verbreitung beschrieben. Symptome und klinische Diagnostik sind eng miteinander verbunden. Es werden zusätzlich Kennzeichen in der bildgebenden Diagnostik und deren Anwendung einschließlich einer Einführung in die Lungensonografie dargelegt. Beispiele tpyischer sonografischer und radiologischer Befunde ergänzen die Kapitel. Ausführlich werden die laborchemischen Möglichkeiten der Diagnostik und der Verlaufsbeurteilung dargestellt. Hierbei werden zudem Methoden zur Rationalisierung der Diagnostik und deren Anwendung in der Triagierung beschrieben. Medikamentöse Therapie, supportive Maßnahmen und Rehabilitationsmaßnahmen werden ergänzt durch evidenzbasierte Beatmungsstrategie und den gezielten Einsatz von extrakorporalen Verfahren. Zusätzlich werde die offiziellen Empfehlungen wie auch die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen dafür erläutert.
