Description

The Berlin painting gallery has an internationally outstanding collection of early Dutch and French paintings. This first scientific catalogue of the collection includes the works of the pioneer generation, i.e. those artists who started their activity at the latest in the second third of the 15th century. In 52 entries, 69 individual paintings are treated. All the important masters of the era are represented, many of them with main works - to name such as the church Madonna by Jan van Eyck, the Miraflores altar by Rogier van der Weyden, the donor board of the Étienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet, the only known painting by the North Dutch Albert van Ouwater or the Montt. Altar of Hugo van der Goes. The entries to the works are based on art historical and painting technology investigations and have been created in interdisciplinary collaboration. Richly illustrated, they present a wealth of new findings on both the well-known works and on previously less noticed pieces in the collection.
