Deshalb wird die folgende Arbeit wichtige biografische Daten von Woody Guthrie heranziehen und seine persönliche Entwicklung parallel zu den politischen Ereignissen in Amerika betrachten. Nur so ist es möglich, die verschiedenen Seiten von Woody Guthrie zu verstehen, in denen sich die Zeit und der Wandel Amerikas widerspiegeln. Guthrie entwickelte sich vom Hillbilly hin zum umherreisenden Hobo, vom Dust Bowl-Balladeer und der Stimme der Geächteten hin zum überzeugten Linken, der in der Mitte der New Yorker Folk- und Gewerkschaftsbewegung für ein anderes Amerika kämpfte. Im Zentrum dieser Arbeit stehen zwei zentrale Fragen. Zum einen soll geklärt werden, wie sich Guthrie zu einem Sprachrohr der Migranten und Unterdrückten zur Zeit der Großen Depression entwickelte. Wie wurde Guthrie zur Figur des Dust Bowl-Balladeers, für die er bis heute bekannt ist? Zudem soll herausgearbeitet werden wie Guthrie die Schicksale dieser Menschen in seinen Texten festhielt und wie diese Ereignisse und Erlebnisse ihn selbst und sein Schaffen veränderten. Zum anderen soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie aus dem umherreisenden Hobo ein politischer Kämpfer in der New Yorker Arbeiterbewegung wurde und welche Rolle Guthrie bei der Entstehung der linken Gegenbewegung der vierziger Jahre spielte.
