In diesem Buch werden die historische Herausbildung der sozialräumlichen Strukturen in Berlin, ihre Modifikation während der Zeit der Teilung sowie die neuesten Tendenzen seit 1990 dargestellt. Dabei stehen Fragen nach der Angleichung zwischen Ost und West sowie nach den neuen Linien sozialer Ungleichheit innerhalb der Stadt im Zentrum. Anhand detaillierter Analysen von Sozialdaten, Wanderungsprozessen und durch vertiefende Stadtteiluntersuchungen werden die sozialräumlichen Muster der Neusortierung der Bevölkerung beschrieben. Durch den Fall der Mauer und durch die immensen Wachstumserwartungen, die sich an der neuen politischen Situation in Europa und an der Hauptstadtfunktion von Berlin entzündeten, erlebten viele Stadtteile eine neue Bewertung. Die Orientierung der Stadtplanung an dem Bedeutungsgewinn der Stadt vernachlässigte die Transformation der ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Systeme, die in beiden Teilen der Stadt zu einer konfliktreichen Situation geführt hat. Die Darstellung orientiert sich an der Frage, ob der gegenwärtige Wandel zu einem Übergang von der politisch geteilten zu einer sozial gespaltenen Stadt führt.
