Fourier's theorem is not only one of the most beautiful results of modern analysis, but it may be said to furnish an indispensable instrument in the treatment of nearly every recondite question in modern physics. Lord Kelvin, 1867 Dieses Buch ist ein Lehrbuch, das den Leser mit den Grundbegriffen der Fou rieroptik vertraut machen und ihn so weit in dieses Gebiet einführen will, daß er Originalarbeiten verstehen und mit den Begriffen der Fourieroptik selbständig umgehen kann. In der Optik spielt die Fouriertransformation eine dreifache Rolle. Zum einen beschreibt sie das Fraunhofersche Beugungsbild eines beliebigen (zweidimensionalen) Objekts. Man kann deshalb in der Op tik die Fouriertransformierte eines Objekts experimentell sichtbar machen (genauer: ihr Betragsquadrat) und auf diese Weise einen anschaulichen Zu gang zu ihrer physikalischen Bedeutung, nämlich der harmonischen Analyse des Objekts, eröffnen. Zum zweiten dient die Fouriertransformation zur Be schreibung der räumlichen Filterung, d. h. des Einflusses von Eingriffen in das Fraunhofersche Beugungsbild auf die Abbildung des Objekts, dessen Bild die mit dem gefilterten Beugungsbild durchgeführte harmonische Synthese ist. Schließlich ermöglicht die Fouriertransformation, den auch in anderen Gebie ten der Physik wichtigen Begriff der Kohärenz von Strahlung quantitativ zu fassen. Die Fouriertransformation spielt heute in fast allen Gebieten der Physik als mathematisches Hilfsmittel zur rationellen Beschreibung und zum tieferen Verständnis physikalischer Vorgänge eine gewichtige Rolle. Auch Nachbar gebiete wie Geophysik, Kristallographie und Meteorologie bedienen sich ih rer.
