Description

Coconut palm grows worldwide & have eulogistic epithets. It is prone to various pest and disease. Among all the pests, eriophyid mite is becoming a serious problem now days. First time it was observed by Keifer at Mexico from Guerrero state in 1965. In India it was first reported in Kerala 1998 & in Maharashtra 2002. They are worm-like, fusiform, microscopic, whitish to pale yellowish in colour. The adult measures 200 to 250 µ in length and 36.52 µ wide and cannot be seen by naked eyes. They spread through wind and also get mechanically transferred. Mite breeds under the perianth and suck the sap from the meristematic tissues of the nut surface. Stunted nuts get dry, sometimes split gummy exudation. Leads to loss in yield up to 30-80 per cent. In future it could be a very dangerous pest if not managed well at present. Research were conducted during 2014-16 by Dr.B.S.K.K.V., Dapoli, MS, India. The objectives were: effect of integrated management on incidence of eriophyid mite; on yield; seasonal incidence; correlation of incidence with weather parameters; survey in Konkan region; lab study on ecofriendly management with biopesticides.
