Description

This study examined the impact of Fadama programme on productivity, food and poverty status of root and tuber crop farmers in central States of Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 934. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, net farm income analysis, double difference estimator, stochastic production function analysis, logit regression model, Foster, Greer and Thorbeeke (FGT) food security index and FGT poverty indices. Result of F-chow statistic shows an impact on the participants’ productivity; propensity score match shows impact on food security and Z-statistic shows impact on poverty status in the study area. The problems of farmers in the study area ranges from high input cost to unavailability, limited finances, lack ans insufficient rural road and storage infrastructures. The study recommends advisory services through the Agricultural Development Programme of Benue, Kogi and Plateau States on resource allocation, adoption of the best technologies in tuber production, pursue opportunities for regional cooperation in international input procurement by policy makers.
