One of the oldest protestant denominations in Liberia, Baptists have played an important role in both Liberia's political and religious life. Prominent Baptists were among the early settlers. Also the Providence Baptist Church, one of the oldest protestant churches in Liberia, hosted the signing of the Declaration of Independence of Liberia. Baptists were also pioneers of theological education in Liberia and West Africa. The Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary, one of the oldest Christian theological higher education institutions in West Africa, has been instrumental in the training of men and women for the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ not only in Liberia, but also all over Africa.
