Venezuela y Canadá poseen enormes reservas de bitumen y crudos pesados. Canadá ha sido exitoso en el desarrollo de estas reservas. A pesar de las condiciones geográficas adversas de Canadá, con crudos inviernos y enormes distancias hasta los puertos marítimos, hay numerosas empresas trabajando en las arenas bituminosas de la Provincia de Alberta, aspirando a enviar ese petróleo de compleja producción a los mercados estadounidense, asiático y europeo. Uno de los productos derivados de los crudos pesados es el combustible diesel, cuyo uso se está expandiendo hoy en día en el tránsito automotor. En Canadá hay seguridad jurídica para los inversionistas. Aún la negativa de los EE.UU. (Administración Obama) de no aprobar el oleoducto entre Alberta y Texas no ha impedido el desarrollo de esta actividad. Venezuela debería contemplar el caso exitoso canadiense. La Faja del Orinoco cuenta con reservas similares a las de Alberta, pero con la ventaja del clima benigno, sin crudos inviernos y a relativa poca distancia de los puertos marítimos. Solo falta la transparencia legal y seguridad jurídica para que Venezuela pueda aspirar a lograr un éxito similar al de su vecino norteamericano.
