Esta monografía, dedicada al análisis de la organización social y de la cultura institucional de la Armada, se presenta dividida en cuatro bloques. En el primero de ellos se describen y se explican: la estructura social, los criterios que marcan la movilidad social de los miembros de la Institución y los valores que subyacen a estos criterios. En el segundo bloque se analiza el periodo de formación inicial de marineros y oficiales, periodo en el que se socializa e inculcan de un modo más evidente aquellos valores que dan cuerpo a la ética institucional guiará las conductas de unos y otros. En el tercer bloque se exponen las dinámicas sociales resultantes tanto de una estructura social fuertemente jerarquizada como de un intenso proceso socializador. La última parte se adentra en el terreno de la cultura institucional: la creación de submundos culturales altamente diferenciados, su lógica interna y el modo en que se articulan las relaciones entre unos y otros componentes de dichos submundos. Se cierra este bloque, así como la obra, atendiendo a las ceremonias rituales y a los símbolos identitarios a través de los que el universo cultural institucional adquiere especial materialidad.
