Description
La digestión anaerobia permite generar biogás como forma alternativa de energía, es un método adecuado para el tratamiento y manejo de desechos orgánicos y favorece la reducción de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Mucho se habla de la importancia de la ingeniería y diseño de los biodigestores, pero se pierde de vista que esto se trata de una biotecnología, es decir, de un proceso biológico conducido por microorganismos con roles muy específicos, quienes a través de complejas interacciones reducen la materia orgánica hasta metano. En este sentido, un conocimiento adecuado sobre la diversidad microbiana, su funcionamiento, el monitoreo oportuno de la producción de sus metabolitos y un plena comprensión de la relación entre las condiciones ambientales y la expresión de genes, sin duda pueden ofrecer la información necesaria para el óptimo control de los biodigestores. Aún más, el saber y relacionar esta información permite vislumbrar novedosas estrategias de diseño y supervisión que en un futuro podrán incrementar la recuperación de energía, rentabilidad y viabilidad para ser adaptado ampliamente en economías en desarrollo.
