Das Buch zeichnet die energiepolitische Entwicklung seit dem 19. Jahrhundert nach und zeigt, wie das heutige Energiesystem durch politische Entscheidungen geprägt wurde – und weiterhin wird. Energiepolitische Weichenstellungen folgen dabei häufig dem jeweiligen Zeitgeist, der einem langfristig angelegten Systemwandel oftmals entgegensteht. Im Zentrum der Arbeit stehen Lebenszyklusanalysen, die sowohl von der EU-Taxonomie-Verordnung empfohlen werden als auch ein zentrales Instrument zur Bewertung ökologischer Auswirkungen darstellen. Anhand von Praxisdaten und unter einheitlichen Randbedingungen werden die drei wichtigsten Energiespeichertechnologien – Batterie-, Pump- und Wasserstoffspeicher – systematisch miteinander verglichen. Neben der vergleichenden Analyse erfolgt eine kritische Auseinandersetzung sowohl mit der Methodik der Lebenszyklusanalysen als auch mit der EU-Taxonomie-Verordnung und den zugrunde gelegten Randbedingungen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass das Energiesystem derzeit nicht den Speicherzubau erfährt, den es für einen erfolgreichen Systemwandel benötigt. Die Ursachen liegen insbesondere in ökonomischen und regulatorischen Hemmnissen, die in diesem Buch untersucht werden. Abgerundet wird die Arbeit durch eine Diskussion gesellschaftlicher Aspekte sowie den Vorschlag einer integrierten Betrachtungsweise für zukünftige energiepolitische Entscheidungen.
