Mit Hilfe von Expertengesprächen von Verbandsvertretern sowie einer standardisierten Befragung von freiwilligen und hauptamtlichen MitarbeiterInnen analysiert die Autorin Beweggründe der Akteure. Der interdisziplinäre theoretische Ansatz der Studie integriert sozialpsychologische Ansätze im Rahmen der Motiverforschung, soziologische Theorien zur Erklärung des Einflusses individueller soziodemographischer Eigenschaften der Freiwilligen und ihres Netzwerks auf die Motive und freiwillige Arbeit in verschiedenen Organisationen sowie ökonomische Theorien zur Erklärung des Einflusses von Anreizen der Organisationen auf die Motive freiwilliger Arbeit.
