Eine hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und instabile öffentlichen Finanzen betreffen das Leben vieler Menschen. Als eine Lehre aus der Finanzkrise ist eine stärkere Regulierung des Bankensektors in den Fokus der gesellschaftlichen Debatte gerückt. Das Ziel ist die Sicherheit und Qualität der Produkte zu erhöhen. Mehrere Akteure des Bankensektors sehen diese Vorschläge kritisch. Sie vertreten die Position, dass eine stärkere Regulierung u.a. zu weniger Kreditvergabe und qualitativ schlechteren Produkten führen würde. Die politische Auseinandersetzung erschwert notwendige Verbesserungen. Unbeeinträchtigt von der Krise vergeben nachhaltige Kreditinstitute in Relation zu ihrer Bilanzgröße mehr Kredite an die Realwirtschaft als nicht nachhaltige Kreditinstitute. Ihr Kundenstamm wächst und ihre wirtschaftliche Entwicklung ist beachtlich. Die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Kreditinstitute wird getragen von einem gesellschaftlichen Wandel hin zu einer größeren Bedeutung von Nachhaltigkeit und der Verunsicherung von Kunden aufgrund der Finanzkrise.Im deutschen Bankensektor sind nachhaltige Kreditinstitute ein kleiner Faktor. Doch Krisen können Auslöser grundsätzlicher Veränderungen sein. Dennoch stehen nachhaltige Kreditinstitute nicht im Mittelpunkt der gesellschaftlichen Aufmerksamkeit. Die unterschiedlichen Strategien und Entwicklung werden kaum debattiert. Die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Kreditinstitute wird nicht gefördert. Dabei bietet die Betrachtung nachhaltiger Kreditinstitute potentiell wichtige Erkenntnisse für den gesamten Bankensektor.
