Es wird ein ]berblick }ber den neuesten Stand der Epidemiologie, Diagnostik und Behandlung des Alkoholismus gegeben. Weitere Informationen betreffen dieG}ltigkeit und Zuverl{ssigkeit trinkanamnestischer Angaben sowie die sozio|konomische Bedeutung der Alkoholabh{ngigkeit. Schwerpunkt des Buches ist die Darstellung der strukturellen und funktionellen Sch{digungen des Gehirns infolge chronischen Alkoholkonsums. Hier finden sich deutliche Unterschiede zu einer Vergleichsgruppe gesunder Probanden. Unter den Bedingungen einer kontrollierten Abstinenz sind jedoch Verbesserungen sowohl auf der morphologischen wie auf der funktionellen Ebene zu verzeichnen, die auch f}r die Motivation der Betroffenen und damit unmittelbar f}r die Behandlung relevant erscheinen. - Als Besonderheit des Buches kann hervorgehoben werden, da~ es eine ]bersicht der behandelten Themen bietet, wobei der aktuelle Stand der Weltliteratur referiert wird. - Es werden erstmals Ergebnisse kernspintomographischer Untersuchungen bei Alkoholabh{ngigen dargestellt, dar}ber hinaus werden systematische computertomographische Untersuchungen referiert und mit den Ergebnissen einer ausf}hrlichen neuropsychologischen Testbatterie verglichen. Das wichtigste Ergebnis neben den morphologischen und funktionellen Verbesserungen stellt die Falsifizierung der der pathogenetischen Hypothese einer "Redhydratation" dar. Offenbar beruhen die Verbesserungen statt dessenauf einer substantiellen Erholung des zentralen Nervensystems. - Ziel des Buches ist es, bei [rzten, Psychologen, Sozialp{dagogen und Sozialarbeitern, die in der Behandlung von Alkoholabh{ngigen t{tig sind, aber auch bei den Betroffenen selbst, ein gr|~eres Verst{ndnis f}r die neurobiologischen Grundlagen der Alkoholabh{ngigkeit zu wecken.
