Methanol wurde vor 62 Jahren im Leunawerk der BASF erstmals im techni schen MaBstab produziert. Es diente anstelle des "Holzgeistes" praktisch aus schlieBlich der chemischen Industrie als Ausgangsmaterial. Der Weltbedarf betragt heute aHein fUr dies en Zweck 14 Mio. Tonnen im Jahr. Das Methanol wurde damals ausschlieBlich tiber Synthesegas (CO + 2H ) 2 auf Basis von Koks, spater von Braunkohle, hergesteHt. Die Kohle wurde nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg von Erdgas und Erd6l als Rohstoffverdrangt. Sie wer den aHotherm (Erdgas) oder autotherm (Erd6lri.ickstande) zu Synthesegas ver arbeitet. In den vergangenen 15-20 Jahren haben zahlreiche Innovationen Metha nol in den Vordergrund des Interesses geriickt. Sowohl die Herstellung als auch die chemische Weiterverarbeitung von Methanol und die energiewirt schaftliche Nutzung dieses Stoffes wurden wesentlich verbessert und weiter entwickelt. 1m vorliegenden Buch wird versucht, das Gesamtgebiet der Synthese sowie der chemischen und energetischen Verwertung des Methanols im Zusammen hang darzustellen. Besondere Beachtung verdienen die Umsetzungen des Me thanols zu Olefinen, Aromaten, hochoktanigen Benzinen usw. Die Entwick lung von Verfahren zum Aufbau von aliphatisch-chemischen GroBchemika lien wie Essigsaure, Essigsaureanhydrid, Vinylidendiacetat, Vinylacetat, Glykol usw. geben einen Einblick. in die vieifl.iltigen Reaktions-und Einsatz m6glichkeiten des Methanols. Die seit Beginn der synthetischen Methanol produktion industrieH durchgefUhrten chemischen Umsetzungen des Metha nols zu Formaldehyd, Aminen, Methylhalogeniden, Estern und andere klassische Synthesen, tiber die im Abstand weniger Jahre immer wieder aus gezeichnete Darstellungen erschienen sind, werden im vorliegenden Buch nicht behandelt."
