In Zeiten rapide anwachsenden Wissens auf vielen Gebieten der Augenheilkunde ist es schwierig, ein Buch zu schreiben, das nicht sehr schnell seinen Wert dadurch ein büßt, daß es schon vor oder kurz nach seinem Erscheinen von der Entwicklung des Fa ches überholt wird. VAUGHAN und ASHBURY haben hier seit der ersten Auflage ihrer "General Ophthalmology" im Jahre 1958 eine Meisterleistung vollbracht. Es ist ihnen gelungen, ihr Buch durch Neuauflagen, die im Abstand von jeweils 2-3 Jahren erfolg ten, auf dem neuesten Stand zu halten. Mit ungeheurem Fleiß und großem Geschick wurde dabei Überholtes eliminiert, während neue pathophysiologische Erkenntnisse, theoretische Konzepte und chirurgische Techniken aufgenommen wurden. Sehr ge wissenhaft wurde dabei darauf geachtet, daß nur solche Neuerungen Eingang fanden, die sich in Klinik und Praxis bewährt und so ihre anhaltende Gültigkeit unter Beweis gestellt hatten. Auf diese Weise ist ein Werk entstanden, das keinerlei Ballast enthält, aber seit Jahren all das umfaßt, was der Student und der junge ophthalmologische Assistenzarzt über das Fach wissen sollten. Die medizinische Ausbildung hat in den letzten Jahren einschneidende Veränderungen erfahren. An die Stelle einer konse quent aufgebauten Vorlesung ist das Praktikum getreten, das nur einen unvollkomme nen Einblick in den systematischen Aufbau des Faches, seine Probleme und seine Möglichkeiten vermitteln kann. Es ist daher in zunehmendem Maße Aufgabe eines gu ten Lehrbuches, diese Lücke zu schließen und dem Studenten in überschaubarer Wei se einen möglichst kompletten Überblick über die wichtigsten Fakten moderner Au genheilkunde zu bieten.
