Der dargebotene Stoff gibt einerseits dem Lernenden eine Übersicht über die Morphologie, Anatomie und Fortpflanzung der Cyanobakterien, der Algen, Pilze und Flechten. (Die Moose und Farne wurden schon im Ergänzungsband "Kryptogamen 2" besprochen.) Andererseits werden dem Lehrenden detaillierte Anleitungen zur Beschaffung und Aufbereitung des Materials für Praktika geboten. Auch dem Wissenschaftler wird das Buch bei der Einarbeitung in ein neues Forschungsobjekt aus dem Bereich der Kryptogamen eine zuverlässige Hilfe sein. Im theoretischen Teil werden die entwicklungsgeschichtlichen und genetischen Grundlagen der Fortpflanzung erläutert. Der technisch-methodische Teil besteht aus einer Zusammenstellung von Präparations- und Versuchsanleitungen. Im praktischen Hauptteil werden die Kryptogamen in der Reihenfolge ihrer taxonomischen Einordnung behandelt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf exemplarischen Darstellungen, die es dem Studierenden ermöglichen, sich daraus einen Gesamtüberblick zu erarbeiten. In dieser dritten völlig überarbeiteten Auflage ist der Text dem aktuellen Stand der Taxonomie angepasst. Er wurde ferner gestrafft und durch Behandlung aktueller Themen, durch neue Tabellen und Abbildungen ergänzt.
