Die Biowissenschaften haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten an Einfluss auf Gesellschaft und Politik stetig zugenommen und inzwischen in dieser H- sicht der Physik den Rang abgelaufen. Biologische Theorien bewähren sich täglich, z. B. in ihrer medizinischen Anwendung, und ihre Aussagen prägen in entscheidender Weise das wissenschaftliche Weltbild. Wenn somit auch der Erfolg biologischer Theorien außer Zweifel steht, so ist doch keineswegs klar, wie diese Theorien strukturiert sind. Denn in der Biologie ist, anders als in der Physik, von Funktionen die Rede: der Fu- tion des Herzens, Blut zu pumpen, oder der Funktion eines Enzyms, eine bestimmte Reaktion zu katalysieren. Für Funktionsaussagen ist jedoch in unserem Bild einer Naturwissenschaft meist kein Ort vorgesehen. Wer allerdings Biologie als Wissenschaft ernst nimmt, muss auch die in ihr verwendete funktionale Rede ernst nehmen. Es führt nicht weit, die Tauglichkeit funktionaler Begriffe für wissenschaftliche Erklärungen zu negieren, oder sie als inhaltsleere „terminologische Schrulle“ der Biologen ausweisen zu wollen. Eher sollte man sich bemühen, die Rolle zu unter- chen, die Funktionsaussagen in der Biologie spielen. Auf diese Weise kann den Gründen dafür auf die Spur gekommen werden, weshalb auf diese Aussagen in biologischen Theorien nicht verzichtet wird. In meiner Unt- suchung will ich deshalb die Rolle funktionaler Rede in biowissenscha- lichen Theorien rekonstruieren. From the Back Cover Theorien in der Biologie dienen häufig der Beschreibung funktionaler Zusammenhänge. Die dabei verwendete Rede von Signalen und von Informationsverarbeitung scheint allerdings eher auf intentionales Handeln als auf gegebenenfalls molekulare Vorgänge zu passen und gälte als Begrifflichkeit physikalischer Theorien als inakzeptabel. Da diese Theorien aber in den Biowissenschaften Erklärungskraft haben, so ist unser Verständnis von ihnen offenbar unvollständig. Ziel des vorliegenden Buches ist es, dieses Verständnis zu verbessern. Ausgehend vom aktuellen Stand der wissenschaftstheoretischen Diskussion werden biologische Funktionsbegriffe und die Struktur funktionaler Theorien rekonstruiert. So zeigt sich für das informationstheoretische Modell der Molekulargenetik, worin dessen Erklärungswert liegt.
