Fur die technische Verwendbarkeit der Kohle ist neben ihren chemischen und pyrotechnischen Eigenschaften die Stuckgro8e und Reinheit ma8gebend. Die nach dieser Hinsicht von den Abnehmern gestellten Anforderungen machen es notwendig, da8 die zutage kommende Forderkohle durch Trennung nach der Korngro8e und durch Reinigung von den beigemengten Bergen einer Aufbereitung unterworfen wird. Diese erfolgte anfangs lediglich auf trockenem Wege mittels Absiebens, spater kam die nasse Aufbereitung nach den fUr Erzwaschen erprobten Methoden in den Kohlenwaschen immer mehr zur Aufnahme. Die Entwicklung des trockenen Absiebens lam sich bei den Saar gruben bis in die 50er Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts zuruck verfolgen. Man suchte eine Verbesserung der Kohlenbeschaffenheit zunachst durch Trennung der wertvollen Stuckkohle einzelner, besonders reiner, Floze von dem unrein en und daher minderwertigen Gries zu erreichen, ein Verfahren, welches anfangs als Handscheidung, seit dem Jahre 1859 aber schon auf feststehenden Stabrattern durchgefUhrt wurde. Diese feststehenden Stabratter wurden in der Folge auf fast samt lichen Forderschachten des Bezirks eingeftihrt, soda8 je nach Bedarf Forder-, Stiick- und Grieskohle verladen werden konnte. Seit dem Jahre 1872 uberwiegt schon die Menge der abgeratterten Kohlen diejenige der ungesiebt abgesetzten Forderkohle. Die Einrichtungen waren in einfachster 'vVeise derart getroffen, da8 langs einer Sturzmauer, welche den Gruben bahnhof oder den dem Landabsatz dienenden Zufuhrweg abgrenzte, Kreisel wipper aufgestellt waren, unter denen sich die mit 23 bis zu 30 0 geneigten Stab ratter befanden. Die Stuckkohle gelangte unmittelbar in die Bahn oder Fuhrwagen, wahrend der Gries in Trichtern sich ansammeite,· aus denen er in Forderwagen abgezogen werden konnte.
