Description

The second edition of this atlas provides a detailed histopathological diagnosis of cervical disease emphasizing carcinogenesis, and correlating morphologic changes with clinical aspects. Instructions of how to obtain and handle tissue samples are followed by a description of the normal histology, of the action of steroid hormones on the cervix, and of the various forms of regeneration and inflammation. The section on etiology and pathogenesis of HPV-induced neoplasia has been enlarged to explain new insights into cellular and nuclear deregulation at the molecular level. A chapter on immunohistochemistry has been added which includes refined detection methods, e.g. with p16 for the early differential diagnosis of premalignant lesions. The latest advances in molecular biological research, with predictive subdivision of neoplasias, facilitate the choice of the proper therapy. All chapters - supported by over 20 new microphotographs - have been revised to include advances in the interpretation and management of cervical disease. The tumor nomenclature is adapted to the new WHO classification; the ICD-O code has been added. The reference list is updated with relevant publications. Review From the reviews of the second edition: "This atlas illustrates diseases that are commonly encountered in surgical pathology practice and includes examples of many rarities. … this text is richly illustrated. All of the 239 figures are in colour and all of the photomicrographs are of very high quality. … This atlas deserves a place on the shelves of any department routinely reporting cervical biopsies, loop excisions or hysterectomy specimens, and will valued by the trainee … ." (Dr. J L Burton, acp News, Winter, 2006) "It is a pleasure to have the reading opportunity to understand and appreciate the authors’ concepts of the normal physiology of the uterine cervix and the pathogenesis of cervical neoplasia. … Most of the supporting images are crisp, colorful, and well chosen. … This single, short atlas of histopathology has developed several real strengths and themes … . The authors … have given us a unique perspective on the histopathology of the cervix." (Terence J. Colgan, Aktuel Astronomi, Issue 1, 2006)
