Bereits der Titel lässt erkennen, dass die Geburt des ersten Kindes eine besondere Bewährungsprobe für die Partnerschaft darstellt. Weniger gemeinsame Zeit, starke körperliche Überlastung, neue Rollenanforderungen sowie Einschränkungen in der Sexualität führen zu Spannungen, Enttäuschungen und vermehrten Konflikten. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich eingehend mit der Fragestellung, welche Veränderungen im Übergangsprozess auftreten und in wie weit dadurch Beziehungsschwierigkeiten entstehen. Die Arbeit basiert auf dem Gedanken, dass neue Aufgaben und Anforderungen Entwicklungsprozesse in Gang setzen. Menschliche Entwicklungsprozesse fördern eine individuelle und partnerschaftliche Weiterentwicklung. Sie beinhalten aber auch die Gefahr einer Überforderung durch die immense Anzahl neuer Entwicklungsreize. Dies kann eine deutliche Verschlechterung der Beziehungsqualität zur Folge haben. Soll der Prozess im Übergang vom Paar zur Elternschaft einen konstruktiven Verlauf nehmen, so benötigt sowohl das Individuum als auch das Paar ein ausreichend vorhandenes Bewältigungspotential wie z.B. einen konstruktiven Kommunikationsstil und ein stabiles Selbstbewusstsein. An dieser Stelle zeigt sich sozialpädagogischer Unterstützungsbedarf. Die Fragestellung mündet deshalb in dem Ziel ein sozialpädagogisches Handlungskonzept zur Unterstützung von werdenden Eltern im Übergang vom Paar zur Elternschaft zu erarbeiten. Die gesamte Schrift gliedert sich in drei Teile: Zunächst werden in Teil I grundlegende Zusammenhänge bezüglich der Fragestellung geklärt.
