A presente obra investiga as características da população livre que casou em Porto Alegre nos extremo sul do Brasil, no período colonial e Imperial (1772-1835). Nesse contexto compreende-se a importância do casamento como sacramento e, também, como evento civil - isso porque, nos registros paroquiais da Igreja Católica, até o início do período republicano, tais assentos tinham, também, um caráter oficial, do ponto de vista do Estado, por conta da ausência do registro civil. Além disso, segundo os padrões vigentes pela Igreja e pela sociedade, as uniões sacramentadas pelo pároco significavam a institucionalização do casamento e a criação de uma nova família, assim como simbolizavam um código de conduta e uma série de preceitos a serem seguidos - antes e depois do ato matrimonial.
