A demência do tipo Alzheimer é uma doença neurodegenerativa que atinge diferentes áreas da cognição e um dos distúrbios observados nessa demência é a maneira como os pacientes lidam com tempo. Esse prejuízo ao lidar com tempo pode ser revelado na sua expressão linguística e a origem desse prejuízo pode ser tanto problemas não linguísticos, como déficits conceituais, quanto problemas linguísticos propriamente ditos. O estudo apresentado neste livro teve por objetivo investigar a origem do comprometimento linguístico de tempo em indivíduos com Alzheimer. Assim, quatro pacientes com Alzheimer foram submetidos a um teste neuropsicológico – o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental – e a dois testes linguísticos que investigavam tempo. Os resultados obtidos nos testes linguísticos revelaram déficit na expressão de tempo em todos os pacientes e esses resultados foram interpretados como esse déficit sendo decorrente de problemas linguísticos propriamente ditos. O estudo apresentado aqui pode contribuir tanto para profissionais da área médica que buscam compreender problemas linguísticos em Alzheimer quanto para linguistas que buscam compreender a representação mental de tempo no sistema linguístico.
