Das vehemente Eindringen fernöstlicher Heilverfahren in den westlichen Kulturkreis führt allmählich auch in diesem zu einer Situation, die aus all jenen Kulturen bekannt ist, welche schon seit geraumer Zeit dem westlichen Medizinsystem ausgesetzt sind: Kranke wenden sich je nach Situation und Anlass an das eine oder andere medizinische System, betreiben also – um es mit kapitalistischem Unterton zu sagen – eine Art "Health Shopping". Das Phänomen lässt sich aber auch aus Sicht der MedizinerInnen als "Health System Shopping" beschreiben. Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit erläutert die Autorin die historischen Ursprünge, Entwicklungen und Entstehungshintergründe fernöstlicher Medizinsysteme und der westlichen Medizin sowie deren wechselseitige Berührungen. Im empirischen Teil werden die Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Studie dargelegt, die sich dem Phänomen des Imports und der Integration kulturfremder Heiltraditionen aus dem fernen Osten aus der Perspektive westlich ausgebildeter MedizinerInnen annähert. Dabei erweist sich der Import fernöstlicher Medizinsysteme in die westliche Schulmedizin als höchst komplexes Phänomen, das die Autorin vor dem Hintergrund der unterschiedlichen klimatischen, politischen, religiösen, wirtschaftlichen, historischen sowie medialen Entstehungsbedingungen der östlichen und westlichen Medizinsysteme ausleuchtet.
