Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Beantwortung der Frage, inwieweit das Kompetenzmodell der Politischen Bildung des Bundesministeriums für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur (BMUKK) den formulierten Überlegungen einer Erziehung zur Mündigkeit nach Theodor W. Adorno entspricht und, ob Gedenkstättenpädagogik (gemeint ist die pädagogische Arbeit an KZ-Gedenkstätten) sich somit an diesem orientieren kann. Da Adorno in seinem Text „Erziehung nach Auschwitz“ neben einer Erziehung in der frühen Kindheit die Schaffung eines gesellschaftlichen Klimas, welches einer Wiederholung von Auschwitz zuwiderläuft hervorhob, beschränke ich mich in meiner Arbeit auf die Frage, inwieweit das untersuchte Kompetenzmodell mit einer Erziehung über Auschwitz vereinbar ist und somit für Gedenkstättenpädagogik von Interesse sein kann. Hierbei wird Gedenkstättenpädagogik als eine Möglichkeit verstanden ein solches gesellschaftliches Klima zu unterstützen. Politische Bildung als Teil der Politikwissenschaft und Gedenkstättenpädagogik als „Kern“ der Politischen Bildung zeigen die starke Verschränkung dieser Bereiche.
