Inhaltlich unveränderte Neuauflage. Kleinstaatlichkeit und noch dazu insulare Kleinstaatlichkeit wurde in der Literatur als ein Problem definiert. Mangelnde Ressourcen, Isolation durch die Insularität und fehlende machtpolitische Kapazitäten galten ungeprüft als Strukturdeterminante Kleinheit der betroffenen Staaten. Erst in der neueren Literatur wurde diese Strukturdeterminante angezweifelt. Der Autor Andreas Holtz hinterfragt diese Annahme und überprüft sie anhand der drei Dimensionen Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft zunächst theoretisch, um die Ergebnisse exemplarisch auf die insularen Kleinstaaten des Pazifiks anzuwenden. Dabei zeigt sich ein differenzierteres Bild von Kleinstaatlichkeit als es bisher angenommen wurde. Der Autor beschränkt sich dabei jedoch nicht nur auf eine theoretische Betrachtung der kleinstaatlichen Problematik, sondern beschreibt gleichfalls die gegenwärtige Situation der pazifischen Staaten. Dem entsprechend richtet sich das Buch nicht nur an sozialwissenschaftlich interessierte Leser, sondern auch an jene, deren Interessen am Pazifik über das Stereotyp des vermeintlichen tropischen Paradieses hinausgehen.
