Die Antikensammlung Berlin enthält einzigartige antike Marmorobjekte, so den Pergamonaltar, das Milet-Markttor oder Kleinfiguren. Unbekannt war bisher, in welchen Steinbrüchen das Material vor ca. 1800?2500 Jahren gebrochen und oft viele Kilometer transportiert worden war. Deshalb untersuchten wir geowissenschaftlich 38 Grabungsfunde v.a. aus Pergamon und dem Mäandertal und konnten sie antiken Marmorlagerstätten zuordnen. 232 Proben antiker Stücke und 262 Lagerstättenproben ? meist selbst gesammelt ? lieferten einen hinreichenden Datensatz für die Verbesserung der archäometrischen Marmorherkunftsbestimmung und die Entwicklung eines leicht bedienbaren Diagnosesystems. Die Eigenschaftsüberlappung von Marmorlagerstätten mit vorwiegend hellen, reinen Marmoren erfordert einen multivariaten Ansatz. Makro- und mikroskopische petrographische Merkmale erwiesen sich als fundamental. Stabile Isotopie (?C, ?O), Gehalte und Verteilungsmuster von Mg, Fe, Sr und Mn sowie der SEE zeigten oft hohes Diskriminationsvermögen. Gelegentlich kamen Gaschromatographie (geruchsbildender Marmore), Kathodolumineszenz und ESR zum Einsatz. Überraschenderweise kam der Marmor zahlreicher Objekte von Prokonnesos.
