"Nichts ist so mächtig wie eine Idee deren Zeit gekommen ist" sagte einst Victor Hugo. Heute muss man dies wohl um 3 Dinge richtig stellen: "Nichts ist so profitabel wie eine Sache die man dem Mainstream gut verkaufbar machen kann". Diese Diplomarbeit wurde 2009 geschrieben um den medialen Wirbel rund um die "Green IT" zu lichten. Um es als das darzustellen was es wirklich ist. Es wird versucht, die "Green IT" objektiv, gelöst von monetären Interessen vieler Beteiligter und vor Allem auch im Sinne der Umwelt - welche letztlich auch ideologisch ("green") ihren Namen dafür gibt - zu untersuchen. Dies wird im Haupteil 1 der Arbeit versucht. Haupteil 2 widmet sich dem Potenzial der Green IT in Österreich. Hierzu liegen hingegen sehrwohl ökonomische Überlegungen zugrunde. Aus einer empirischen Erhebung wird die durchschnittliche Hardwarelandschaft abgebildet und auf ihre ökologischen Gesichtspunkte untersucht. Diese wird sodann mit (ebenfalls durch die Emperie erhobenen) "Best Practice"-Werten verglichen. Diese Arbeit stellt eine Momentaufnahme der "Green IT" in einem breiten Spektrum dar, kombiniert mit dem Versuch sie zu erklären, zu ordnen und ökologisch greifbar zu machen.
