Description

Adolescents from a non-English speaking background (NESB) in Australia typically come from collectivistic cultures, in which the family is seen to form the unit of society. In collectivistic cultures, individuals are often socialised to suppress their negative emotions in response to stress because this helps maintain social harmony. However, Australia is an individualistic culture in which the individual is seen to form the unit of society. Although generally it is more acceptable to express negative emotions in response to stress in individualistic cultures, there are also social forces in Australia that promote a culture of stoicism as it is a sign of being emotionally self sufficient. This study aimed to explore whether a preference for coping with stress by suppressing emotions was related to the type of acculturation strategy NESB adolescents used (integration, assimilation, withdrawal, or marginalisation) as they culturally adapted in Australia.
