Aber wie werden die Zinsspezialisten den Kunden die vorteilhafteste Strategie anbieten, um das Zinsmanagement zu optimieren ? In dieser Weise können also die Zinsmärkte und die Organisation des Front Office dargestellt, und die Interaktionen zwischen dem Zinsmarkt, dem Front Office und den Kunden erklärt werden. Derivative Instrumente sind eine Möglichkeit das Zinsänderungsrisiko zu steuern. Als derivative Instrumente werden Zinsinstrumente bezeichnet, deren wesentliche Eigenschaften von Kassapapieren abgeleitet wurden. Sie werden unterteilt in bedingte (optionnelle) und unbedingte (feste) Termingeschäfte. Die Derivate sind sehr populär geworden, und werden immer mehr für Steuerungsmaßnahmen im Zinsmanagement verwendet. Aber ihre massive Umsetzung enthält auch Gefahren, und die Derivate haben in zwei der größten Krisen der letzten Jahre eine Rolle gespielt. Die Nachteile der Derivate werden anhand der konkreten Beispiele der Asien-Krise von 1997 und des LTCM-Hedge-Fund-Debakels von 1998 dargestellt.
