Mit einer lang andauernden und teilweise erbittert geführten Debatte begleiteten die Printmedien die Schließung und den Abriss des Palasts der Republik. Für das Selbstverständnis des gerade wiedervereinten Deutschland kam dem wichtigsten Repräsentationsbau der untergegangenen DDR hohe symbolische Bedeutung zu. So wurde das im Zentrum Berlins gelegene Gebäude zum Mittelpunkt ideologischer Machtkämpfe und einer oftmals traumatischen Geschichtsbewältigung, die durch die Forderung nach Wiedererrichtung des Berliner Stadtschlosses eine besondere Zuspitzung erfuhr. Im Streit um Abriss oder Erhalt des Palasts der Republik mischten sich politische Argumentationsmuster mit ästhetischen, moralischen, historischen, denkmalpflegerischen und städtebaulichen. Die Autorin Judith Mauch untersucht die in den Zeitungen und Architekturzeitschriften ausgetragene Debatte nach 1989, aber auch deren Vorgeschichte: die Darstellung des Palasts in west- und ostdeutschen Printmedien, seit 1973 das Bauvorhaben bekannt gegeben wurde.
