Kaum ein Thema wurde in den Geisteswissenschaften bisher so vernachlässigt wie das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Wildtier. Diese Pionierarbeit untersucht Sichtweisen auf Tiere in Zoos als Spiegel bürgerlicher Lebenswelten; die "gezähmte Bestie" sowie das "Wildtier als Freund" galten als Beweis, die Natur in der Kultur beherrschen zu können. Die Künstlichkeit der "Natur" in den Zoos war ein Raum bürgerlicher Selbstfindung. "Lebendige Bilderwelten" in Zoos korrespondierten mit Reiseerfahrungen und exotistischen Kulturprodukten. Deutsche Zoos inszenierten ein Reservat der romantischen Innerlichkeit, später demonstrierten sie die Führung des weißen Mannes, in dessen Obhut tierische und menschliche "Exoten" gezähmt lebten.Im Unterschied zu bisherigen Chroniken untersucht der Autor Zoogeschichte als Schnittmenge europäischer Blicke auf das Fremde und erkennt in der Präsentation sowohl der Tiere in den Gehegen, als auch der Menschen in den Völkerschauen die Muster der Integration und Ausgrenzung: den verachteten Barbar / die wilde Bestie, den ungläubigen Heiden / das unvernünftige Tier, den unterhaltenden Exoten / die verniedlichte Kreatur.
