Die Bedeutung privater Sicherheitsfirmen im Nachkriegs-Irak wird schon alleine daran deutlich, dass sie die zweitgrößte Gruppe bewaffneter Personen im Dienst der Besatzungsmacht darstellen. Während die US-Armee mit einer Personalstärke von 130.000 bis 160.000 und Großbritannien mit 8.000 bis 12.000 Soldaten im Irak vertreten ist, arbeiten seit dem Ende der offiziellen Kampfhandlungen private Sicherheitsunternehmen mit über 25.000 Angestellten im Irak. Ihre Rolle und insbesondere ihr Verhältnis zu den Streitkräften stehen im Zentrum des Erkenntnisinteresses dieser Studie. Der Autor arbeitet die unterschiedlichen Zielsetzungen der regulären Streitkräfte sowie der privaten Sicherheitsfirmen heraus und illustriert die resultierenden Spannungen an zwei konkreten Vorfällen, indem er einerseits auf die Ermordung von Mitarbeitern der Firma Blackwater im April 2004 und andererseits auf die Problematik des sogenannten Blue-on-White-Fire eingeht.
