Jahrhundert: Auch hier tauchte ein historisches Phänomen auf, das später mit dem Begriff „Hexenverfolgung" nur recht allgemein bestimmt wurde. Im Jahre 1562 kam es zu einer Welle von Prozessen, deren Anwachsen und Ausweitung man später als „Große Hexenverfolgung" bezeichnete. Diese in Wellen sich vollziehenden Hexenprozesse ließen nach den 1630er Jahren nach und schienen bald ganz zu stagnieren. Dennoch gab es vereinzelt Städte, in denen die Hexenverfolgungen weiterhin durchgeführt wurden. Der Zeitraum dieser Arbeit schließt, gerade was das Vest Recklinghausen betrifft, an die großen Verfolgungswellen aus den 1630er Jahren an und untersucht zwei Fälle, die lange nach dem Dreißigjährigen- und Siebenjährigen Krieg stattfanden. An dieser Stelle geht es darum, von dem allgemeinen Begriff "Hexenverfolgung" wegzukommen, um eine persönliche Ebene darzustellen.
