Anfang der neunziger Jahre haben Schnack und Neuzling, mit dem gleichnamigen Titel ihres Buches "Kleine Helden in Not", bereits unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Jungen und ihre gesellschaftlich oft problematischere Situation gelenkt. Das vorliegende Werk beschäftigt sich nun besonders mit dem schulischen Aspekt. Spätestens nach Pisa wurde deutlich, dass Jungen in einigen Kompetenzbereichen erheblich schlechter abschneiden als Mädchen. Die Arbeit stellt nun ausführlich die momentane Lage von Jungen in der Schule da. Darüberhinaus wird eine umfangreiche Ursachenforschung betrieben. Der letzte Teil geht dann schwerpunktmäßig auf die bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt entwickelten Fördermaßnahmen für Jungen ein.
