Der Aspekt der Eigenaktivität von Kindern im Spiel stellt einen wichtigen Gegenpol zu deren relativ passiven Rolle bei der Wissensvermittlung im Unterricht dar. Im Gegensatz zur Unterrichtssituation rücken die Schüler im Lernspiel in den Vordergrund. Ihr aktives Handeln kann die Ausbildung von Lernprozessen ermöglichen, die ihr Gefühlsleben, ihre Lernmotivation und ihre kognitiven Fähigkeiten positiv beeinflussen. Für Lernhilfeschulen ist ein Rückgriff auf die unzähligen, im Handel erhältlichen Lernspielangebote zu verschiedensten Themenbereichen oft nicht ausreichend. Vorgefertigte Lernspiele sind in der Regel so allgemein ausgerichtet, dass sie den spezifischen Bedürfnissen einer individuellen Schülergruppe mit ihren jeweiligen Defiziten nicht in genügendem Maße gerecht werden können. Aus diesem Grunde ist es die Grundlage dieses Buches, wichtige Kriterien herauszuarbeiten, die ein Lernspiel definieren sollten und in diesem Sinne Anregungen für Lehrer und Lehrerinnen an der Schule für Lernhilfe zur Gestaltung einer auf die jeweiligen Bedürfnisse der Klasse zugeschnittenen spielerischen Umwelt zu geben.
