Die Biografie untersucht das Leben des niederländischen Dirigenten Willem Mengelberg, dessen Orchesterensembles ein hohes Ansehen genossen. Durch seine Arbeit am Concertgebouw-Orchester in Amsterdam und anderen Orchestern hat sich Mengelberg einen internationalen Ruf aufgebaut und zur Entwicklung der klassischen Musikszene in Europa und den USA beigetragen. Darüber hinaus war Mengelberg ein wichtiger Förderer zahlreicher Komponisten wie Gustav Mahler und Richard Strauss sowie Begründer der jährlichen Aufführungen von Bachs Matthäuspassion in den Niederlanden. Als Chefdirigent des Amsterdamer Concertgebouw-Orchesters entwickelte Mengelberg das Ensemble zu einem der renommiertesten der Welt und verschaffte seiner Residenzstadt ein Musikleben von internationalem Rang. Seine musikalische Karriere wurde allerdings durch seine umstrittene Rolle während des Zweiten Weltkriegs überschattet.
