El Diccionario de la lengua española de la Real Academia Española tiene un puesto central en la lexicografía del español y solo puede comprenderse teniendo en cuenta su particular historia de más de tres siglos. Esta monografía tiene como objetivo el análisis de las tres ediciones del diccionario publicadas en los últimos decenios del siglo xix, que marcaron una importante modernización de la lexicografía española (DRAE 1869, 1884 y 1899). La publicación surge como resultado de un proyecto de investigación sobre la «Historia interna del Diccionario de la lengua castellana de la Real Academia Española en el siglo xix (1869-1899)», financiado por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (PGC2018-094768-B-I00). Tiene una sólida unidad temática y pretende esclarecer la importancia de cada una de las tres ediciones para la historia de la lexicografía española, así como la evolución que representan dentro de la lexicografía académica.
