Die Entstehungsgeschichte der Koranübersetzung im Europa und der religiöse Diskurs im islamischen Raum hatten Auswirkungen auf die Methoden der Übersetzung. Heute gibt es mehr als 45 deutsche Koranübersetzungen von Muslimen und Nichtmuslimen. Sie unterscheiden sich auch hinsichtlich des in ihnen entworfenen Islambildes. Die Arbeit versucht aus interdisziplinärer Sicht der Sprach- und Koranwissenschaft deutsche Koranübersetzungen zu charakterisieren, um die Distanz zwischen arabischer Ausgangssprache und deutscher Zielsprache in sprachstruktureller wie in pragmatischer Hinsicht zu verdeutlichen und Möglichkeiten ihrer Überbrückung aufzuzeigen. Untersucht werden auch die Möglichkeiten einer Übersetzungsstrategie, die auf Erkenntnisse der Pragmalinguistik und der traditionellen Koranwissenschaft tafsīr (Koranauslegung) und asbāb an-nuzūl (Offenbarungsanlässe) aufbaut, und die Rolle der Koranübersetzungen im angestrebten Kulturdialog.
