Dieses Buch widmet sich dem Missionswerk der Gesellschaft Jesu im kolonialen Brasilien von 1549 bis 1760. Das jesuitische Missionsprojekt setzte einerseits mittelalterliche Traditionen christlicher Missionierung seit den Kreuzzügen und der deutschen Slawenmission durch die Bettelorden fort. Andererseits fügte sich die frühmoderne Brasilienmission der Jesuiten in eine lange Reihe globaler «Zivilisierungsprojekte» ähnlicher Art, wie etwa die englische Eroberung Irlands, die spanische Mission in Mexiko oder die portugiesische Präsenz im Kongoreich. Mit dem im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert aufkommenden Barock schufen diese Missionsprojekte die erste weltumspannende Kulturerscheinung in Religion, Kunst, Architektur und Literatur. Im Zeitalter der elektronischen Massenmedien gewinnen die frühmodernen Missionsprojekte einen kaum zu übersehenden Gegenwartsbezug.
