Dieser Band dokumentiert Forschungsergebnisse einer Tagung des Sonderforschungsbereichs 600 «Fremdheit und Armut. Wandel von Inklusions- und Exklusionsformen von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart» (SFB 600) an der Universität Trier. In Anknüpfung an die in Band 5 dieser Schriftenreihe präsentierte Diskussion thematisieren die Beiträge die Frage nach der Kontinuität herrschaftlicher bzw. politischer Ordnungen im Umgang mit Fremden und Armen seit der Spätantike. Dabei wird gefragt, welche Folgen die christlich motivierte Umdeutung und Neuordnung der Armenhilfe in den europäischen Gesellschaften bis zum Spätmittelalter hatten, welche neuen Formen der Inklusion/Exklusion von Fremden und Armen mit dem Aufstieg des modernen Staates verbunden waren und welche Ordnungsmuster von Solidarität in Gegenwart und jüngster Vergangenheit angesichts internationaler Zuwanderung, von Globalisierung und Europäisierung entstanden sind. Den chronologisch geordneten Beiträgen sind drei Untersuchungen vorangestellt, die das Thema in epochenübergreifender Perspektive in den Blick nehmen.
