Seit seiner Öffnung im Jahr 1978 ist China von «brain drain» betroffen: Von den ingesamt 800.000 Chinesen, die bis 2006 zum Studium ins Ausland gingen, sind bisher erst 200.000 zurückgekehrt. Jedoch gehen - angelockt von der wirtschaftlichen Dynamik - in jüngster Zeit immer mehr Personen in ihre Heimat zurück, unter anderem, um dort ein (High-Tech-) Unternehmen zu gründen. Auf Basis von Interviews mit zurückgekehrten Unternehmern in drei High-Tech-Branchen untersucht die Arbeit beispielhaft für den Wirtschaftsraum Shanghai, welche Rolle dieser «reverse brain drain» für Innovationsprozesse spielt. Hierfür werden potenzielle positive Wirkungen von zurückkehrenden Unternehmern mit Hilfe der Literatur zunächst theoretisch beleuchtet. Die Arbeit schließt mit politischen Empfehlungen, die sich vor allem auf eine effektivere Förderung von Rückkehrern beziehen.
