Dieses Buch ist ein Beitrag zur Erforschung des spätbyzantinischen Kirchengesangs, wobei das heute auf Zypern verwahrte Kalophonon Sticherarion A4 des Machairas-Klosters und die darin enthaltenen Werke des Manuel Chrysaphes im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen. Die Studie bietet eine ausführliche kodikologische und paläographische Analyse der Handschrift, Biographien von rund 40 byzantinischen Komponisten aus der Zeit vom 13. bis zum 15. Jahrhundert und einen Katalog der musikalischen Incipita der jeweiligen Kompositionen. Anhand ausgewählter Werke des Manuel Chrysaphes wird schließlich eine neue Methode zur Analyse des musikalischen Textes sticherarischer Melodien vorgestellt.
