Description

Zwischen 1826 und 1856 gehörte die Reform des Militärsystems zu den wichtigsten Anliegen der osmanischen Zentralregierung. Zunächst ging es dabei um die Einrichtung eines stehenden Heeres und um die Ausbildung der Soldaten nach europäischem Vorbild. Ab Ende der 1830er Jahre rückte die Einführung eines geregelten Rekrutierungsverfahrens in den Vordergrund. Eine Analyse der Diskussion, die in diesem Zusammenhang geführt wurde, führt zu Ergebnissen, die nicht nur für die Militärgeschichte relevant sind, sondern auch für die osmanische Ideengeschichte im Allgemeinen.
