Flüge durch die Nacht und Verwandlungen in Tiere: Immer wieder erzählen Hexen und Werwölfe ihren Verfolgern von solchen Erlebnissen, bei denen sie die Grenzen zu einer anderen Wirklichkeit überschreiten. Es sind Berichte, die das Motiv einer Reise in die Welt der Toten preiszugeben scheinen. Die Autorin hat diese Elemente des Hexenstereotyps aus Prozeßakten des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts herausgelöst und mit vorchristlichen Glaubensvorstellungen verglichen. Dabei findet sie Verbindungen zwischen dem Hexenmuster und der Ideenwelt eurasischer Schamanen. Außerdem gibt es Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen zum Mythos von der Muttergöttin und den ihr folgenden Totenseelen. Diese Phänomene verdichten sich mit den Aussagen der Nachtfahrenden und Werwölfe aus den Nassauischen Grafschaften zu einer nächtlichen Geschichte. Zum ersten Mal wird der ländliche Hexenglaube aus dieser Region auf seine Wurzeln im europäischen Schamanismus untersucht.
