Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Motiv des Boxsports in der bildenden Kunst und der Frage, inwieweit sich in diesen Kunstwerken gesellschaftliche Ereignisse und Verhältnisse spiegeln. Im Zentrum steht die Metropole der Weimarer Republik Berlin. Das Boxen war der Zuschauersport der Zwanziger Jahre, der den fast nackten männlichen Körper - vergleichbar den Revuetänzerinnen - ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit rückte. Doch nicht erst die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts 'entdeckte' den Boxer und seinen Sport als Sujet. Unter Berücksichtigung der Antike und anhand ausgewählter Darstellungen (Malerei, Graphik, Pressezeichnung, Plastik) namhafter englischer, amerikanischer und deutscher Künstler von etwa 1730 bis 1933 wird aufgezeigt, daß sich im Boxmotiv der bildenden Kunst die jeweiligen Werte und Moden einer Gesellschaft widerspiegeln. Der moderne Boxsport als gesellschaftlicher Faktor in Zeiten fundamentalen gesellschaftlichen Wandels wurde seitens der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung bis heute nicht in seiner Wirkung auf die Kunst erkannt. Daher stellt diese Arbeit in ihrer Beschäftigung mit dem Bildmotiv des Boxens in der Kunst für Deutschland ein Novum dar.
