Mit seinem Hauptwerk Der steinerne Schläfer begibt sich der herzegowinisch-bosnische Dichter Mak Dizdar (1917-1971) in die Welt der mittelalterlichen Grabsteinkultur seiner Heimat, die ihn über viele Jahre hin beschäftigt hatte. Diese Übersetzung stellt die erste vollständige Übertragung des Werkes ins Deutsche dar. Dabei soll der Paralleldruck zugleich den Originaltext neu zugänglich machen, wie auch dessen Vergleich mit der Übersetzung ermöglichen. Die kommentierende Einleitung erläutert in einem ersten Teil den religionsgeschichtlichen Verständnishintergrund, von dem her die Gedichte ihre Bedeutung erhalten, und sie gibt in einem zweiten Teil eine knappe Darstellung der Thematik und der stilistischen Eigenheiten der vier Teilzyklen. Der umfangreichste zweite, Das Wort vom Himmel, dem thematisch zentrale Bedeutung zukommt, wurde mit Absicht am ausführlichsten behandelt. Mitübersetzt wurden im Anhang auch Dizdars eigene Anmerkungen und das Wörterverzeichnis zu seinen Gedichten.
