Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, das Libretto der venezianischen Barockoper erstmals als historisch eigenständige literarische Gattung einzugrenzen und systematisch zu erforschen. Poetologische Fragestellungen, die unter anderem auf das barocktypische Phänomen der Gattungsmischung zielen, sind der Ausgangspunkt der Analyse. Diese wird sodann auf den lebensweltlichen Kontext der venezianischen Oper ausgedehnt: Ein aus kritischer Lektüre Bachtins gewonnenes Konzept der 'Karnevalisierung' ermöglicht eine Neudeutung bislang kontroverser Texte wie etwa Busenellos Incoronazione di Poppea. Die nötige Abgrenzung des untersuchten Typus von anderen Spielarten der Barockoper, die am Anfang und am Ende der Arbeit vergleichend in den Blick genommen werden, ist gleichzeitig Anlaß für die Spurenlegung einer Gattungsgeschichte des italienischen Opernlibrettos von den Anfängen bis zu Metastasio.
